According to The Advocate Messenger, two super markets, Save-a-Lot and Kroger, are having problems getting along due to a parking lot. The sign the Save-a-Lot employees were instructed to put up near the concrete barrier placed between the two businesses states: "This barrier was not constructed by Save-a-Lot. It appears to have been installed by the competitor's landlord."
The "competitor" referenced is Kroger, and their landlord is North Carolina company STEC No. 09-4083 LLC. Ron Turner. However, after several phone calls by the Messenger on Friday, Turner did not respond or comment on the incident. Before the barrier existed, the strip mall, composed of 11 different stores, could be accessed by an entrance from U.S. 127 with a traffic light. Save-a-Lot’s parking lot now no longer has access to the traffic light, but it does still have an entrance from U.S. 127.
The barrier has resulted in separate parking lots for the following businesses:
• The ‘north’ parking lot has access to Kroger, Cash Advance, AT&T, Emily Nails, Factory Connection, Wah Mei Buffet, Impressions II by Wendy Hair Care and CATO Fashions.
• The ‘south’ parking lot has access to Save-A-Lot and Pit Master’s Wings & BBQ.
Now that the south lot does not have access to the traffic lot, this has brought on some major concerns for Gary Taylor, the owner of Pit Master’s Wings & BBQ. “Let’s say, God forbid, there’s a fire at one of the stores in the north lot and the blaze extends to Save-A-Lot or Pit Master’s” Taylor explains. “Before this island barrier, fire trucks, or any other emergency vehicles, could simply go from one end of the mall to the other. Now they’d have to go all the way back out onto the highway and re-enter another parking lot.” Taylor hopes the city attorney and other public officials research the barrier and do what he believes is best for all the businesses in the mall.
Other business owners in the mall spotted drivers going up onto the sidewalk to get from one parking lot to another. These types of maneuvers were confirmed by the tire marks visible on the bright yellow curb. In addition, when leaving the area, specifically the north parking lot, cars can only make a right hand turn, so those making a left have no stop light, therefore making this entrance/exit a prime zone for accidents. The trouble this barrier has caused for customers and businesses alike could result in serious injuries if something is not done about the issue.
