According to The Herald, University of Kentucky had 1,500 freshmen students and staff volunteer to work at community groups and neighborhoods around Lexington as part of UK's annual FUSION day.
The number was a new high for the event, which was partially due to the attendance of the swim and dive team, which brought 35 volunteers. As part of the event, some volunteers stenciled storm drains and others trimmed brush, cut tree limbs, replaced solar lights, and painted signs.
Geraldine Goh, executive director for FUSION, which stands for “For Unity and Service In Our Neighborhoods”, said the project helps groups in need and gets students into parts of the community that they might not see as UK students. "There are organizations out there that need our help," Goh said. "It's really an important part of their college career."
